A customer lost their keys to their office door. I gained entry without causing any damage and replaced their lock cylinder - all non-distructive. #locksmithing #nondestructive #happycustomer
I was called out to a home recently to install a personal key safe on a property for safety and ease. Key safes allow quick access to friends and family in emergencies. One of the main benefits of installing a key safe is there's no need to give out spare keys. Instead, you only need to give those you trust the keypad code, so they can enter the code and gain access to the key. This key safe can hold up to 3 keys and is accessible via a code combination.
When taking the DIY approach, there's a chance that these can be fitted incorrectly, resulting in the removal of the safe. So our advice is to get key safes installed professionally by a trusted and trained locksmith.
Another late night call this Sunday for a customer who found themselves locked out in Brighton. Fortunately she called LockRite and I picked the lock using non-destructive techniques to get her back into her home safely and without the cost of replacing the lock and keys.
I had a call this week from a customer who couldn't lock their composite door after it had been heavily slammed. After checking the door, it was clear there was a small issue with the weather strip along the bottom of the door. It looked as though it may have jumped over - there's a simple fix for this. By simply moving the weather strip back over to it's natural position the door became functional and was able to be closed and locked once again.

Do you tend to leave your keys in the lock on the inside of the door? You’re not the only one.
Leaving your keys in the lock may come with some benefits, you always know where your keys are and it can make it easier to keep your doors locked while you’re in and keep others out at night. However, you need to be careful when leaving your keys inside the lock to avoid getting locked out.
If your door uses a lock that locks automatically on the latch and requires the use of a key instead of just the handle to pull back the latch and open the door and you have left your keys inside, then you will not be able to insert your keys fully on the outside to get yourself back in should the door slam shut.
It can happen to anyone, especially when your thoughts are focused on other things, such as getting supplies or taking the bins out at night. It only takes a gust of wind to blow your door closed and you’ll be locked out. My advice is to not leave your keys inside of the key hole. This will cause spare keys to not work and if your keys are left inside of your door a burglar could potentially smash a front door window pane and let themselves in using your key.
If there is no glass in your door or if you have reinforced glass, there is the option of installing a thumb turn cylinder in your door on the inside. This would allow ease of locking the door from the inside without preventing keys from being used from the outside. These are especially useful if you want to child proof your doors as some come with a useful child proof push in and turn feature.
If you’re interested in thumb turn locks and want to see if this might be a benefit to your household call me at Lockrite Petworth 01798 309817 for more info.
The hot weather we've been having in and around Petworth has got everyone with upvc patio doors wanting to open them wide to let the hot summer sun in for likely the first time all year. However, many of my customers find that they are now unable to get the upvc doors to open. During this warm weather, the change in temperature can cause the doors to both shrink and expand. This can have an effect on the door bolts, making them drop. Unfortunately, what this this means is it's likely you'll start having issues where you can't open your UPVC patio doors, or your door is difficult to shut or lock. As Sussex is so close to the sea, it's possible that over the winter months, sea salt has got into the lock mechanism and caused rust to build up causing the working parts of the door to cease up.
An experienced locksmith will be able to fix your uPVC door problems in and around Petworth. I can help, call me today on 01798 309817 for a free, no obligation quote.
There are a couple of things you can do to prevent door lock problems during the hot weather we've been getting.
The first is to apply a moderate amount of lock specific lubrication at the changing of the seasons to the locking points of the door that you're having difficulty opening, closing, locking or unlocking. This will help to disperse any water and salt and prevent future rusting.
The second is to ensure you open the door in question to stop it from dropping every week or so. If the door becomes harder to close and you're having difficulties lifting the handle to push the locking bolts into place, I can make the necessary adjustments to fix your door. Call me today on 01798 309817 for a reliable and friendly service.
I was called out this week in the very early hours of Sunday morning following a break in to a high street shop. The window had been smashed through, resulting in the shop being left unsecure.
The window needed to be boarded up as soon as possible to secure the premises, but, upon my arrival, the security officer informed me that they'd been unable to contact the key holder.I couldn't go ahead and pick the lock to secure the window from the inside because there were no managers available for authorisation. I couldn't screw the board into the frame from the outside either, as the frame was aluminium and this would cause significant damage to the window frame.
This wasn't a problem for me though, I've been professionally trained in all aspects of burglary repairs. I set to work making my own frame from wood battens. These were fitted to create a frame to position behind the existing frame, which allowed me to have a strong base to secure the security board on to. This process meant there were no screws needed to be placed into the metal frame and no damage caused.
Doors and locks are so varied these days, it's no surprise some customers call Lockrite Petworth for support with their lock, to find out there is actually no fault with the lock at all. For example, I had a customer earlier this week call me for a free quotation visit. They asked if I could take a look at one of their uPVC patio doors. The customer thought the hooks on the UPVC mechanism were not operating correctly when the handle was lifted (they believed the hooks weren't throwing as expected). The good news for this customer was that there was nothing wrong with their lock. They hade made the mistake of checking if the throw bolts would shoot into the lock position when the door was not closed. What the customer didn't realise was that their door mechanism comes with a "Snib" - When your door has a snib this needs to be compressed (this happens when the door is closed) for the shoot bolts to be operated and engaged.
I checked all the other points of the uPVC door to ensure the lock and door was operating as it should and explained there was no problem with their lock. I didn't charge the customer for this visit - I'm glad I could give the customer peace of mind free of charge. If repairs aren't needed, LockRite does not charge a a call out fee. When you call a LockRite locksmith you only ever pay when work is completed.
Are you having issues in Petworth with your uPVC door, mechanism or handles? If so, I can help. I provide locksmith services in Petworth and the surrounding areas. Call me today on 01798 309817, for a free no obligation quote.
Called out to replace a broken mortice lock for a gentleman customer. Over the phone he was sure he would need a brand new mortice lock due to it being broken, shaping off his key and being stuck in the locked position. He was also concerned about how much this could cost after calling several other companies. I asked to come and take a look at the lock with no call out fee. Upon inspecting the lock and then gaining entry to the mortice lock, with a lot of knowledge and a little skill, the mortice lock which had indeed stopped working could be fixed, in under 10 min.
After fixing the mortice lock and cutting the customer brand new additional keys on site I left the customer with a lock that would last several more years and no additional costs for parts or replacement locks. Just goes to show that repairs can be made on site and you don't always need to get the whole lock replaced, which could save money and hassle.

There are many factors to consider when choosing a locksmith in Petworth. Our checklist below should help you when making a decision.
Carefully consider where you hide your outside spare key. Avoid hiding places like over the door frame or beneath the doormat. Experienced criminals will check these places immediately.
If the home you are moving into is not brand new, you should change the locks on all the doors. The person who used to live there may still have a key.
Turn the ringers off on all your phones if you will be away for a prolonged period of time. If a burglar keeps hearing your phone ring, they'll know the home is not occupied, making it more likely for a break-in to occur.
When calling a locksmith it is important to know what type of lock needs fixing or replacing. Use our visual guide below to identify your particular lock type.
As autumn approaches and the temperatures start to drop the nights start closing in. Unfortunately darker evenings mean more opportunities for burglars so it's essential to look at your home security and make sure it's up to the job. Anti snap locks, deadbolts and window locks will help to prevent most opportunist thieves and security lighting will deter intruders.
If you are unsure how secure your home is, call your local LockRite Petworth locksmith today on 01798 309817 to arrange a home security survey.
As summer approaches and the days get warmer it is natural to leave windows open and doors ajar to keep homes cooler. Unfortunately this can be an open invitation to the "sneak-in" opportunist burglar who will take advantage of open doors and windows and make off with small, expensive items such as mobile phones and laptops, or even a set of house keys to return later when the house is empty or everyone is asleep.
If a burglary takes place without any visible signs of forced entry it can invalidate insurance claims, so it is important to remain security concious in the summer. One way to help prevent "sneak-in" burglaries is to install door security chains and window restrictors. This allows doors and windows to be left open slightly while offering enough security to deter an opportunist thief.
Call your local Petworth locksmith on 01798 309817 today to discuss your home security needs.
